This stuff is just wonderful. Better than any cola (even better than Cherry Coke, I have to confess) and might be cause for me to start on the fizzy drinks again. This can only be bad since my guts don't react well to fizz it has to be said. I have no idea how many cans of this stuff I have drunk since I've been back but I think that we can all agree that the answer falls nicely into the Too Many category.
I'm even adding this to my official, motivational list of things that I will be glad to be back in the UK for. There aren't really that many things on the list yet, it has to be said. I've loved living in Holland for the last eight years (OK, technically one of them was in Luxembourg, but I returned to Holland for many of the weekends, so it kinda counts).
There are still several cans of this stuff in the larder at the moment, but I'm thinking that by the time that we leave this evening, that will no longer be the case...
Yum...

Does it have alcohol?
I can only have fizzy drinks that contain alcohol!
Some of the UK supermarkets do reasonable "own brand" D&B drinks, but no one seems to sell proper diet root beer here yet. :-(
I agree with Mr Maps. For example, coke tastes really weird without whisky.
Sx
Not really a fan of Dandelion 'n Burdock, I have to confess... more a ginger cordial kinda gal - Green Bottle... I can't get more local than that! :D
Erm... how useless am I at promotion! That should be Bottle Green!! :D
I used to adore Dandelion & Burdock in my younger days. I remember the weekly arrival of the fizzy-pop man, collecting the empties and leaving a variety of bottles, always including D&B.
It was then strictly rationed, so I remember D&B as a real treat.
I've not had it for many, many years. I'm wondering whether I should even think of it now for fear of temptation ... if I remember correctly, it's not too high in calories! :-)
Okay, I knew you Brits were an odd bunch... but a fizzy drink made from weeds???
If you want to talk Root Beer, even diet... the best I've ever had is from Texas... IBC Root Beer. Comes in brown glass bottles and is the creamiest stuff... even the diet stuff (which was what I drank most of the time) was fab.
Isn't Burdock a plant with big, fat poky burrs that grows absolutely eveywhere and gets huge??? If it is what I think, we have them here and they're a major pain in the ass. They stick to your skin too, never mind just to the dog's hair. Ouch!
Dandelions are everywhere too, but at least they are small... and colourful.
But that aside... what, exactly, does it taste like that makes it so desirable?
Mapstew: Nope. Sorry, it's good clean soft drink loveliness.
James: You can indeed buy acceptable own brand versions, but if you can find Barr D&B, that that is the preferred option. always.
Scarlet: I'm more fun sober. Add alcohol to me and I get either loud or sleepy. But by all means, bring you own additives...
Helga: Never heard of this Bottle Green. Elaborate, please...
Ro: Try it. you know you want to... :-)
Ponita: Well, since we can't get rid of the damn things, may as well eat/drink them, right? Well, all I can say is that it tastes just damn fine...
Note: Barr also sell 'Original Dandelion and Burdock' in bottles, but it tastes quite different and IMHO not as good.
Oh Ponita is right! IBC Root Beer is delicious! I remember alternating between root beer and mountain dew when I was drinking soda regularly. Wasn't a big fan of coke--unless it was part of a cocktail or used in bbq recipe.
Although, the only time I drink soda now is on a plane, and it's alway ginger ale, Canada Dry! That's some good stuff.
Enjoy the soda!
Oh, Mountain Dew! Now there's a drink to lust after!
I'm not sure it's ever been on sale in the UK, but I used to drink it in New York. Incredibly sweet and that bright colour that screams "this is unhealthy" ... and what ingredient is in there that makes it so damn addictive?
Mountain Dew? Unhealthy? Have you *seen* Irn Brew?
I've Mountain Dew when in the 'States and agree the colour of it is just so... out there!
But the taste! Yuk!
;-)
You don't think drinking rust would be healthy? Irn Bru puts hair on your chest ;-)
Get a tortoise.
They eat weeds.
Have researched this stuff... and now I want to try it! One site says it is reminiscent of sasparilla and/or root beer, both of which I really enjoy.
@Map: I am sure you could add come vodka to it to make it a pop with a kick!
Don't you have Google, Fammy? Bottle Green is a company almost local to me, who make sorbets, cordials and other bottled drinks. I love their Ginger & Lemongrass cordial, and they also make Elderflower!
Bottle Green's Elderberry cordial is splendid and their Lemongrass and Ginger is great as a hot drink but neither is a patch on either Mawson's Sarsparilla or their Dandelion & Burdock. Every so often they'll have a stall on the market in Manchester and I'll stock up.
