When I was finishing off my education I was still a teenager. I’d made it into my twenties, but the mentality was very much still that of a juvenile teenager. I was, if you will, a bit of a prat. During these last few years of irresponsibility, poverty and eternal optimism I met a fellow student with who I built a friendship. Despite him being just as much of a prat as me, the friendship has lasted*. Even though we are now twenty years older and much water has flowed under the bridge, we are still capable of mindless, irresponsible fun. I confess that our antics no longer cause injuries or quite so much damage to property but it is, as they say, the thought that counts.
So this friend of mine came for a visit this weekend. Since I am pretty much living as a student again for the moment, it was easy for us to slip back into the mind set of twenty years ago. The main difference being that we were able to spend a little money this time, since we aren’t really students anymore. So, coffees were drunk in cafés, slices of apple pie and salmon pistolettes were consumed and of course, computer games were purchased. (My purchase of a PSP game is something that is actually going to cause me sufferance, as I have been challenged to a dual by a thirteen year old who is more than likely going to whoop my ass at it.)
One of the highlights of the weekend, for my visitor at least, was the realisation that a certain lamp that he has seen many times in one of his favourite restaurants, is for sale in shops. This excited him quite a lot.
We ate together in Amsterdam on Saturday night and both did our usual people watching. This generally involves being pretty childish and making comments about anyone that comes into view, but it was the diners that got my attention this time. In an Italian restaurant in the middle on Amsterdam on Valentines night more than half the diners were same sex couples. What I couldn’t work out was, if they were friends that couldn’t get dates or gay/lesbian couples. Obviously in our case, it was a pair of sad single muppets but the rest could have been either. The waiter clouded the issue by giving all the ladies roses, but not one to a man. I’m sure that there were gay couples in the restaurant somewhere, but I’m not as good at spotting them as my friend is, since he bats for their team too.
But it was an excellent weekend and only spoiled by the fact that it was so closely followed by a Monday. Somebody should do something about that.
*It had a gap of about 4 years when he decided that he didn’t want to talk to me anymore . The silence ended one day when he rang me up to ask me how to install Skype. No, I don’t understand either.

That lamp is too funny!
Glad you had such a great weekend. They should have given everyone roses, not just the women!
Let us know how badly you get your ass whooped by that 13 year old... so we can laugh... Oh, but with you, not at you, of course.
Did he purchase the lamp? (yeah - I'm a girl..I just wanna know about the shopping)
I am sooooo loving that lamp!!! Where can you buy it from (hoping there is a UK supplier)...
Just a thought - you say your friend bats for the other side - perhaps he's hoping for a conversion? ;^)
The lamp is available in the UK. Simon reports that stocks are somewhat hard to find but I think that this is where he ordered his from.
If he is hoping for a conversion from me then he has the patience of a saint and the optimism of an optimistic thing in Optimism Land. We have known each other for 23 years. During that time I have been married (for eight years) and in a long term relationship (with a woman, in case there was any doubt, for another 8 years). I have two kids and he knows that I still fully appreciate the female form.
I don't think *anyone* could consider me worthy of that sort of devotion. I'm sure he will agree.
Ponita: You are correct. My mugshot has vanished...
LMAO!! I have just spotted where you would switch the lamp on/off... now I REALLY do want to get one!! :D
As to my conversion theory - it was just a thought. I remember when I was young and working for a large banking organisation. I effectively met my first lesbian friend, and one weekend, was invited to a party around at her place. I was still living at home at the time, and my father flatly refused to let me go (I was under 21, and in SA at that time, 21 was the age of minority, so disobeying my dad was not an option).
I have a feeling my dad is a closet homophobic, but it's an issue we've never discussed, and no doubt never will. In the meantime, I'll stay friends with all my non-hetero pals!!
Nice to see your mugshot has returned. Perhaps one minus the shades could be put up?
I checked out the link to that cafe. A very fancy looking cafe! Nothing like what we have here in Canada. And does everyone sit at the long tables together... all willy nilly? Or are there smaller tables for couples or foursomes? Not used to seeing that at all.
did he happen to mention in passing, why it was that he had been absent for 4 years?
maybe he tried being straight for a while? got married, had a couple of kids, before discovering it wasn't for him? the straight life that is. 4 years is practically a lifetime.
Ponita: There are also 2 and 4 seater tables but the long ones are certainly there too.
the projectivist: Nope. Although he wasn't talking to me, he was still in regular contact with my sister and so I was able to have his exploits relayed to me that way and vica versa. The reason for the silence was never 100% clear but I'm sure it was linked to general stress surrounding both of us, although it was clearly far more his fault than mine, as is the case with everything. Obviously...
Update: His lamp has arrived this morning and is proudly on display in his lounge. Until his fascination deminishes a little, the neighbours will just have to continue to wonder when he is constantly flicking his lights on and off...
I should have a voice installed in the lamp that says, "Turn me on!"
